local information - The Algarve
The Algarve has a wonderful
climate with an average of 340 days of sunshine each year. The warm sea and air
currents from North Africa make it the ideal year-round holiday destination. The
Algarve has its share of modern resort complexes - sandy beaches and warm sun
are perfect if you are seeking a relaxing beach holiday and a guaranteed tan.
There is a stunning coastline of fantastic grottoes, bays with golden sandy
beaches and calm, clear waters. The combination of sun and sea is ideal for all
kinds of water sports.
Despite the obvious influence
of tourism, drive a short way inland or to the western area, and you will find
the real Algarve and a way of life unchanged in centuries.
A car is not essential if you intend staying in Lagos but you will need one if
you want to explore more of the coastline, find secluded beaches, visit inland
mountain villages or water parks and/or the zoomarine. Lagos is close to Sagres,
Aljezur and the environmentally protected Costa Vincenta. A trip to see the
sunset at Cape St Vincent, the furthest South-Westerly point of Europe, is well
worthwhile. Monchique is just half an hour drive up through the foothills and
orange growing region.
local information - Lagos

Lagos is a beautiful, historic town – one of the most attractive and picturesque in the Algarve – retaining its charm and Portuguese character. It is neither an over-developed fishing village (though there is still a working fishing harbour) nor is it a purpose-built resort because the local council have preserved its ancient heritage. It has a wide, palm-fringed promenade, fort, harbour and Marina all set around the largest natural bay in Portugal.
Lagos is an ideal holiday destination, with many beaches - the broad expanse of Meia Praia, coved Batata Beach and Ponta de Piedade, Porto de Mos and Praia Dona Ana – all with great beach cafes.

The narrow streets contain excellent shops and lots of little boutiques, a wide choice of lively bars, indoor and outdoor restaurants and cafes which cater for all tastes and pockets and, of course, serve delicious fresh fish. There are several supermarkets, where food and wine is cheap, as well as markets and fairs where local handicrafts and bargains can be found.
Portugal itself is renowned for being child friendly with children being welcome anywhere at any time. The streets and beaches are safe and there is plenty to do. Information on attractions and entertainment in the area is available at the apartment.
The Algarve is famous for having the finest golf courses in Europe and Championship golf is available at courses in Lagos – Boa Vista and Palmares – and fifteen minutes further to Parque da Floresta or Penina.

Sailing, windsurfing, water skiing, scuba diving, tennis, horse-riding and micro-light flying are all available locally. From the marina you can arrange pleasure boat or fishing trips.
